iPads at St Agnes

The use of information technologies is an essential and powerful skill in our world. St Agnes Catholic High School is committed to ongoing development of students academically, socially and emotionally and is aware of the importance of seamless integration of information technology within our students’ education.

Our focus is on building capacity and extending the skills, knowledge, attributes and dispositions of our students to actively participate in the world beyond school. As you know, having a 1:1 device available does not of itself improve learning. Students already have knowledge of computer operations at their fingertips, but it is important to teach students to use ICT in innovative and creative ways that will enhance their learning and to engage in higher order thinking through the use of ICT to potentially transform their learning.

In 2013, St Agnes Catholic High School introduced its 'Have a go, Share and eValuate (HSV) iPad Program and find the iPad an engaging tool for learning and teaching. Subject specific apps (or programs) can be seamlessly integrated into each subject area, alongside more tradi
tional learning approaches, leading to a deeper student understanding and engagement.

Both iPads and laptops will give students immediate access to technology and will help engage them in the learning process in new and different ways. It is an exciting opportunity for our students to become increasingly skilled at using a range of technology to access and present information, to problem solve and to work collaboratively.

Recommended iPad Models

Our recommended iPad models and cases are:
*16GB iPad HD (also known as iPad 3) with WiFi, placed in a full coverage case
      or
   * 16GB iPad 4 with WiFi, placed in a full coverage case An iPad Mini is not recommended as this model has a reduced display and typing surface, which is not suitable for use at St Agnes Catholic High School. A 'full coverage case' is a case that covers the front and back of the device and includes an inbuilt stand.

Purchasing Options

Families have several options in where they can buy iPads for their students from. St Agnes highly recommends parents include some form of personal insurance for their child's device. A full coverage case for the iPad is essential to protect the device.

There are currently two purchasing options families are welcome to pursue.

Option 1

Buy directly from Apple

St Agnes' families can now buy iPads and accessories directly from Apple at a discount. Families can make purchases either via the web portal listed below, or by going into an Apple store (the nearest one is in Penrith) and explaining to the Apple staff that the student is from (or will be coming to) St Agnes Catholic High School.
Either of these options will mean that the family will be offered the items at a discount from normal retail prices.
Families that go into the store can also get help from the Apple staff in setting up and getting to know the iPad, setting restrictions on the iPad or setting up an iTunes account.
While other items (like Macbooks) can be bought through these methods (at a discount), it is important to note that iPads are still required for year 7 to 10 students (as opposed to Macbooks).
There are also financing options available in store or online.

Option 2

Source your own iPad package

St Agnes encourages families to shop for themselves with regard to finding the best price they can for their child’s iPad package.
an iPad HD (also known as iPad 3), 16GB wifi
an iPad 4, 16 GB wifi.

Once again, we highly recommend a full coverage sturdy case and the consideration of some form of personal insurance for the child's iPad

Student Applications (Apps)

Educational Apps have been critically evaluated to assess students educational benefits. Every App listed has been evaluated by our Emerging Technologies Coordinator, the appropriate subject Teaching and Learning Coordinator and by the students in our Technologies Group.

At the beginning of the year students will be given the required list of Apps, including unique product codes, from our Volume Purchase Pricing system. The cost of these Apps are covered by the school.

Students are taught how to connect to our network, school expectations on how to use the iPad correctly and how to use specific Apps.

AirWatch

AirWatch, by VMware, is the current enterprise Mobile Device Management (MDM) platform for Catholic Education Diocese of Parramatta (CEDP)

In 2015, AirWatch replaced CEDP's previous MDM platform, Casper, and was recommended to CEDP as its next generation MDM platform based upon extensive testing and review process.

The AirWatch MDM platform, in conjunction with other technology platforms e.g. Zscaler Content Management System (CMS), enables CEDP to provide a safe online learning and working environment for all CEDP students, staff, contractors and volunteers.

All supported Apple IOS, Android and Windows mobile devices (CEDP owned or personal e.g.BYOD devices)are required to be enrolled in AirWatch in order to connect to CEDP's student and staff wireless ICT networks.

Further information regarding the CEDP AirWatch platform, and Frequently Asked Questions can be found in the attached document.
