On Tuesday 5th June, the Girls Rugby League team participated in the Girls Panther Trophy Gala Day out at Whalan Reserve. The competition comprised of schools in the Penrith District from both Catholic and State High Schools.

The girls were entered into the Under 16’s 9-a-side competition, where the majority of our team members are still only 14 and 15 years old.

12 teams were entered in this age group and our pool consisted of teams from Xavier, Cambridge Park High and St Clair High.

Our first game was against Xavier where we had a comfortable win 5 tries to 1. Scorers in this game were Faith, Raewen (2), Briley and Shahana.

The second game was a solid win to the girls against St. Clair High. Some strong running by Faith and Solo set up try scoring opportunities where we scored 4 times in the end. Otile crossed for a double and Faith and Tyla completed the scoring.

Unfortunately, the girls handling at times let them down in our third game against Cambridge Park. The opposition had some big girls who tested our defence, but to the girl’s credit, the tackling from our girls improved as the day progressed, with Faith leading the way with crunching tackles against the other teams. St Clair was unable to cross our try-line in this game and we scored 3. In the end we won 14 -0 with Faith and Solo being standout players in attack.

Our final game of the day was against Rooty Hill High in the qualifying Final. Winners of this game will progress through to the Western Sydney Gala Day where teams from the Canterbury, Parramatta among some more prominent districts will be played against. This was to be our hardest and toughest test for the day. Rooty Hill was worthy opposition testing many areas of our team’s courage, but in the end, 3 tries to 2 victory allowed us to take the win. Tries from Kat, Otile and Shahana along with our strong defence allowed our girls to receive an invitation to the Western Sydney Gala Day, where we will represent the Penrith District.

Well done to the team members who all contributed on the day.
