Two students from St Agnes High School, Rooty Hill who were recently awarded a $1,000 grant for their sustainability initiative are now in the running for a $20,000 grant for their school. Vote now on the Interface website to help St Agnes win a classroom refurbishment for school.
In Term 3 last year, Jack Maddeford and Bailey Raymond were tasked with coming up with an idea or concept to reduce human waste as part of a challenge-based learning project in their Geography class.
After learning about a water bottle refill station scheme implemented in Sydney’s Northern Beaches, Jack and Bailey got to work, investigating how the refill station could be introduced at St Agnes to reduce plastic bottle waste and reduce the school’s environmental impact.
Jack and Bailey presented a proposal to school Principal Peter Brogan, who was encouraged to fund the installation of the refill station based on the evidence presented by the students.
The bottle refill station was installed last term and has proved highly popular with students who are keen to fill their bottles with filtered water as an alternative to unfiltered water bubblers. Fellow student Matthew Read submitted the winning entry in a competition to design the colour scheme and branding for the refill station.
You can show your support by voting for the project on the Interface website to help Jack and Bailey win a $20,000 grant towards classroom refurbishment work. You can read more about the project and see photos of the filtered water cooler installed at the school.
Principal Peter Brogan congratulated the boys on their outstanding achievement and urged everyone in the community to support the initiative.
‘Jack and Bailey have demonstrated professionalism, ingenuity and maturity beyond their years in conceptualising, developing and implementing their project,’ said Peter. ‘I encourage everyone to show their support and vote for their project to recognise their outstanding work to date.’

January 21 is the feast day of St. Agnes of Rome, our patron saint. She is the patron saint of young girls, chastity, survivors and the Children of Mary. St. Agnes is often shown as a young girl with a lamb, which represents her purity, and a palm branch, like other martyrs. The lamb may be at her feet or in her arms, reminding us of her innocent faith and courage.
